Instagram Engagement is the interest and interaction other users show towards your content, simply put it’s the likes and comments on your posts and stories.  It can show your followers loyalty level, but also virility.

The Engagement Rate (ER) is the number of likes, comments, or total of both on your posts and can be worked out by;

ER = (Likes &/or Comments) / Followers

Phlanx have an online Engagement Calculator  to easily work out your average ER.  You can compare it with others in your niche with the same following number (yes it’s true, the bigger your following the lower your engagement) but it is also useful to work it out for a few of your most recent posts too (rather just average)!

IG Posts are no longer getting the exposure they used to, it’s not as simple as posting a photo and Instagram sharing it to all your followers.

So how does it work; when a post receives lots of likes and comments the Instagram Algorithm can assume your post is good quality that more people will want to see… and so share it out to more of your followers who may be interested, and also to the hashtag feeds and explore page.

So by encouraging and increasing Engagement, we’re increasing the number of people who will see our posts… which in turn will increase engagement.

Use your Instagram Insights to find out when your followers are most active and ensure you post then. 

By posting when users are active they are more likely to see and like your post soon after it is posted, making IG realise it’s good and want to share it out more.

Make sure it’s Quality over Quantity – stick to a schedule you can consistently maintain and that fits with your work flow!

To reach an audience outside of your following, ensure to:
– Use smaller and larger hashtags (80% less than 150k hashtags)
– For hashtag inspiration type a key word in the IG search bar or check #’s in relevant top posts.
– Make sure they’re relevant to either your photo or your caption.
– Don’t use the same Hashtags over and over, switch it up!

Liking and Commenting on posts outside your follow[ers/ing] is a great way to show IG what topics you are interested in (and hint hint IG where you would like your posts to be shared out to).

Writing personalised comments takes time, there is no getting around that (unless you hire a Virtual Assistant) but by following hashtags in your niche relevant content will pop up in your feed making it a lot easier to find and engage with, saving you time!

We all want natural engagement, no useless comments from fake accounts please!  Engagement Pods exist, and I’ll talk about the pros and cons another time, but you can create your own engagement group and feel good helping each other grow in the process.

Ask your friends, clients, or simply people whose posts you love if they want to engage with you in a meaningful way to drive virility….and promise you will do the same!

How can you do this easily?

  1. Ask them to turn on post and/or story notifications by clicking the 3 dots next to one of your posts and selecting “Turn on Post Notifications”
  2. When they notice a post, read the caption and comment on it with at least 4 words.

Personally I would add – don’t worry if you miss a post, please don’t ever feel the pressure to keep up…. but lets comment on each others content as much as we can!

It’s worth noting it would help you are in the same time zone, so you are available when you post.

DON’T ever DM someone with a link to your post – they need to go to your feed and select the photo themselves!

Yes an eye catching image will grab a users attention but you really want them to linger on your content and engage!

Think about who your ideal followers are and write captions with them in mind – what are they interested in reading about? how can you solve their problems? Own and share your story.  Not only does this create a connection with you, but it shows IG that your content is valuable if users are spending time reading it!

Encourage your followers to comment on your posts by asking questions in your captions, suggesting they tag friends, or simply by creating thought provoking captions.

You can also prompt users to visit your Linktr.ee, send you a DM for more info, and mention all the other ways they can get in touch!
